We are now moving in to the second week of the New Year, and statistically, it is the time when all those good intentions and resolutions made on the 31st December, are thrown out of the window. Many people will have enthusiastically signed up for their local gym or vowed to get involved with something worthwhile, perhaps to benefit their community.

If you’re struggling to keep motivated with your new healthy lifestyle, then there’s a really good gym you can get involved with. In fact, it’s so good, it’s called the GoodGym.

The GoodGym combines regular exercise with helping the community. Very simply, it’s a way to get fit whilst doing good. It began a few years ago in Tower Hamlets, east London, when a group of runners decided that gyms were a waste of energy, and that energy could be put to better use, fulfilling tasks, errands and jobs for people in the community.

There are a number of ways you can get involved; by joining regular and sociable ‘group runs’, whereby you work in a team to achieve something together, or ‘one-off missions’, which means you get sent to sort out a problem … running there and back of course, or ‘coach runs’, where you run to have a cup of tea with your coach … who will probably be an elderly person who will appreciate your company for an hour or so.

The GoodGym spread up to Hackney and now also operates in Liverpool and Bristol.
