Living on the streets is a far from ideal scenario for anyone, but during the winter months, as the temperature drops, the plight of the homeless becomes even more arduous. The Hackney Winter Night Shelter (HWNS) provides a warm welcome, hot meal and a bed for 25 homeless people each night during the winter months in east London.
What began 17 years ago as a few volunteers from local churches trying to address a problem on their doorstep, has developed in to the HWNS and last year was the first time they’d opened their doors on the 1st Nov, continuing until March of this year.
The shelter runs over various sites in the area and is made possible by more than 750 volunteers. HWNS are always happy to receive additional help, so if you’d like to get involved, then contact the NWNS through their website. Also, if you’d like to support them in another way, then tomorrow (11th Dec) the Blue Tit salon on Lower Clapton Road are having a charity day in aid of the Hackney Winter Night Shelter, so why not pop along.
