Wyke Farms in Somerset is a family run business that has been making cheddar since 1861. Aside from their cheese, the thing that brought this enterprising farming family to our attention is their ambition to be one of the greenest brands in grocery.
Producing their own electricity and gas from renewable sources, minimising package waste and filtering and reusing waste water are just three of their approaches. They’ve also installed 117 solar panels in a dairy barn and if that wasn’t enough they have an entire green energy facility (AKA an Anaerobic Digester Plant) which enables them to turn 75,000 tonnes of farm waste materials a year, such as pig and cow manure, and convert it in to energy. This in itself allows them to produce 14,000 tonnes of cheddar. Not bad.
