This week (1st – 7th June) is Women’s Sport Week. Organised by the charity Women In Sport, it is an opportunity to celebrate, raise awareness and increase the profile of women’s sport across the UK and has already gained a great deal of exposure in the news.

In the UK, women’s sport is lagging way behind its male counterparts, from grassroots level up to professional competitive sport, media coverage and sponsorship, from the playing fields right up to the boardroom. Far more men play sport each week than women and women’s sport makes up just 7% of all sports media coverage in the UK with a meagre 2% of national newspaper sports coverage dedicated to women’s sport. Between September 2011 & December 2013, women’s sport received only 0.4% of reported UK sponsorship deals in sport. All these aspects have a further reaching negative impact in terms of gender inequality, something that celebrating the role of women in sport this week, they hope to turn in to a more positive outcome.
